We all know the story of that wonderful tree from paradise that gives everlasting life and nourishment. True or not, it is fascinating to think that there exists a plant that is very versatile and has uses far beyond what a lot of us know about. From its roots to its leaves, literally, every part of the plant has its own purposes. Welcome, the king of grasses – the bamboo.

The bamboo plant is native in Asia and other temperate regions but has now been cultivated in major parts of the world. It comes in different species to adapt to different environments. From the temperate, moist regions, hot tropical ones and to cool mountainous regions and highland cloud forests.

The bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world; with a growth rate of over 12 inches per day. It doesn’t need fertilizers to grow, you don’t have to water it, it is tremendously pest resistant and does not need replanting. You can cut it from its base and it regrows. It also has natural antibacterial properties and can grow in almost any type of soil. What more can you ask for from this wonderful blessing?

Bamboos are used as building materials, similar to how wood is used. Its tensile strength rivals steel. It’s used to make furniture, paper, fuel, to make roads, medicine, musical instruments, jewelry, armor, utensils, the roots can be prepared as food and you can make beer from the plant!

It’s fibers can be woven to make rugs, diapers and even into clothing. Since the plant has natural antibacterial properties, these items woven from it retains this antibacterial magic. Talk about “going green”  from infancy. It decomposes and it doesn’t harm the environment. It helps in slowing down climate change, its organic and it’s completely renewable. What a wonderful, fantastic plant product!

Next time, I will show you how these bamboo fabrics are made.
